When I think of god saying, "Let there be light." I can't help but imagine a blinding flash... much like a big bang would be.

The reason they are at odds because it is hard for Creation followers to believe that we came from Ape-Like Creatures. The Evolution Followers have a hard time believing that the world was could be created in 6 days.
I personally believe that the six days were actually longer than said, and that god got the ball rolling and let evolution take over.

Creationists who are Biblical literalists don't accept evolutionary theory because it doesn't agree with what the Bible says.
Evolution doesn't discount the possibility of a "Divine creator" per se, but as such a concept cannot be tested, it is outside of the realm of science. We cannot test for a supernatural creator, and so it is not included within scientific theory.
Some people who believe in an intelligent creator accept the evidence for the fact of evolution; they "meld" the two so that they have no cognitive dissonance about the concepts.

"Scientific" Creationism was not scientific, and was merely a weak collection of anti-evolution arguments. At its heart, the doctrine of Creationism is: "God created the universe." No conflict there.
Evolution makes no commentary on divine intervention. It merely avoids filling in gaps by attributing them to the divine.
If you don't capitalize intelligent design (the vapid political doctrine is capitalized), with faith, you could allow evolution as a tool. By definition, it would be scientifically untestable.

They are not "at odds".
Evolution is Science. It is based in reality and is verifiable and testable.
Creationism on the other hand is mythology. It is based in fantasy and is not verifiable nor is it testable.
Do try and tell reality from fantasy ok?

If you believe in every word of the bible than you can never believe in evolution.
But if you only believe the bibles were stories to tell people how to live good lives than yes you can believe in evolution and be religious.
People who believe in evolution can still be religious.
Logical Christians say "god" made evolution.
Bible tumping Christian Fanatics say "god" made us from dirt and breathe life into us.

They shouldnt be at odds. God made man in his own image,
so God must be something like an ape and then they evolved
to what they are now. Man lost his tail and learned to walk
upright and to eat Brocolli if forced to.
