My mom just had a stroke and is making a good recovery. I don't live at home.

There is a danger it may happen again.

What's the best way of dealing with the fact she lives alone?

I have been thinking that organized activities are one way...phone calls another. What else?

you can ask the doctor for a group of stroke patients. My sister had a stroke last March. She is 41yrs. old. So I know we got her into group activities with other stroke patients. And they doctors told us tree Questions to ask her if we think she is having another stroke.
1. Can you tell us your name , birthday and the month and year it is.
2. Smile for me
3. Touch your finger to your nose.
These are simple things but a stroke makes it difficult to do this. I will say a special prayer for your family and you.

Depending on how bad the stroke was and how it has affected her . There are agencies out the to help her . There are home health aids , visiting nurses who can check on her. There is no guarantee that she wont have another, and some people never have another one. Make sure if she has blood pressure problems or is a diabetic to keep those under control. Also if you have any other relatives that can check on her. If you notice her dropping things, slurred speech, or any thing out of the norm for her have it checked out.

I don't want to scare you...but once person has a stroke then tend to have them again, but worse. It is hard to monitor then if they are alone, maybe a nice neighbor could stop by everyday.

Home Health care. You can hire someone to go in and check on her as often as you like. They'll check her vital signs and overall well being, and it is very very helpful. Contact a Nursing Facility in the area, and they can direct you to someone.

A companion or health care worker would be advised.
