They are both effective but......If you use the right kinds of soap and know the proper handwashing techniques it can be more effective and don't use hot water, it opens the pores on your palms and lets bacteria in make sure the water is tepid. Purell(or whatever) doesn't always kill all types of bacteria and viruses. And also if you wear rings, handwashing will rid the jewelery of more then purell.

I work in a home for the aged where handwashing is a must and both are used and encouraged. Anti-bacterial soap and water I believe are more effective (if you wash your hands properly) but the hand sanitizer works too if soap is not immediately available.

I work in housekeeping and keep a bottle of the sanitizer on my cart so I do not have to keep running to a sink.

I hear that soap and water is best because hand sanitizer kills 99.9% of germs. Good and bad germs. I like to use hand sanitizer if I'm in a hurry though.

I'm a fan of soap and hot water - the hand sanitizers will eventually lead to bacteria becoming immune to the antibacterial agents.

I like soap and water, but I'm starting to use sanitizer. I think both are equally effective.

Those no rinse hand sanitizers are not much more than a gimmick. The best method is still to use plain old soap and water.

soap and water will clean your hands... anti-bacterial soap will kill bacteria and clean your hands and hand sanitizer is good for when you don't have soap and water.
