No! The myth about cats and pregnant woman is the overwhelming smell of amonia in their pee. I would certainly socialize your pets to the new baby though. Never leave the baby unsupervised with the pets. Cats can be a little tougher. Dogs are generally accepting. Try to reinforce calmness in your animals and to be easy or gentle. When I brought my daughter home from the hospital my 3 year old Rottweiler sniffed her, licked her face and then curled her entire body around my daughters carseat. It was the cutest thing I ever saw. That dog dies when my daughter was 9 years old and they were the best of friends. I now have a 2 year old daughter and a Boxer who we got when the baby was 3 months old. I couldn't ask for a better friend. As your child grows, teach him or her boundries. Like food & toys, pulling vs petting.

No, you don't. There are many resources available that help pets adjust to a new baby, starting before the baby arrives. You may want to try the library for a book about it, or search on-line. My Vet has a four year old, and his many cats and dogs were with him before the baby came. Everyone has adjusted quite well.

Beware the many myths you will hear from others about cats sucking milk from a babies mouth and suffocating them. This is not true, and when you think about the mouth of a cat to a baby, it is literally impossible.

best to you

No you don't need to get rid of your pets when you are planning on having a baby. That is just an old wives tale..no truth to it.

Having pets & being pregnant isn't harmful..Many, many women own pets that are pregnant. I had dogs, cats 7 horses while I was pregnant with all 3 of my kids. My family had cows, chickens, ducks, dogs & cats when my mom was pregnant with me and my siblings.

Definately not, would you get rid of the kids if a new pet were living in the household. Don't you love your animals anymore? To stop to behaviour of your animals changing I suggest when the baby comes, you will still spend quality time with the pets and continute to love them and treat them as before.

no you do not have to get rid of your pets. Just tell your wife not to clean the litter box or go near it while she is pregnant. Someone else will have to do it as cat stool carries a bacteria that causes toxoplasmosis in humans and it is very dangerous for pregnant women.

Absolutely not! Don't let anyone try to convince you of that. Your doctor should be able to tell you about any precautions that need to be taken with animals in the house.
