I will be going to study abroad for a year in France or Brazil. I really want to become flunet in one of the two languages. Wich language do you think would be more likely to be mastered or close to, in that year?

Sorry,
I suggest you learn English first .

A year won't make you fluent but if you learn quickly and study a lot-and can find people to practice speaking with-then you will have a good handle on it by the time you take your trip. The languages are very similar so it's up to you which one you think would benefit you the most. Good luck!

If you are very self-motivated, and willing to dedicate about 5 hours per week, and work on it every day, you can become conversational in about a year in either language. French is spoken by more people in the world than Portuguese.

Either way you choose, I'm jealous. Have fun!

It all depends on the person learning, how they're learning, the language itself...

I would guess that French would be easier to learn, since English is pretty much a bunch of French coated on a Germanic skeleton.
