I can understand half of what is being said when I am in a group of people but the other half--I feel as though I always have to ask-what's that mean? Am I the only one who struggles with this?

Just a few of many:

The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English
Slang: The Topical Dictionary of Americanism
The Oxford Dictionary of Slang (Oxford Paperback Reference
American Slang Dictionary, 4E.

One of the problems is that slang evolves rapidly and the dictionary writers have a hard time keeping up. An on-line dictionary might be more up-to-date. There are three links to web dictionaries below. For more just search for "slang" on Yahoo! or Google.

One of the purposes of slang is to create a barrier to outsiders. By having words and phrases that only the members of the group understand they can exclude everyone else. When these slang words get into the mainstream the "in" groups have to invent new words to keep their identity.

The Online Slang Dictionary can be found at http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wrader/slang/
You just put in the word you're looking for. They keep it fairly up-to-date.
Another website that keeps fairly up-to-date is http://www.slangsite.com/
The website http://www.thesource4ym.com/teenlingo/ explains the nature of slang and how it is used differently by various teenagers around the world. Some of these words may have different meaning for teenagers in one area than another. But this is a comprehensive list of many of the words you'll hear.
A whole list of slang words is presented in the Slang DIctionary on the website http://www.tnellen.com/cybereng/slang/ Maybe some of the words you want will appear there.
