Because most people are religious, and *because* they are religious they are understandably embarrassed when certain (and innumerable) flaws in their beliefs are pointed out and laughed at.
Personally, I think religious jokes are hilarious. Like the person posting above me -- religion *is* a joke, it's just that the ignorant masses are either incapable of realizing this or (more likely) DEEP ,DEEP in denial.
Telling jokes about religion they will tell you is "disrespetful" or "sacrilige"....no no not at all.
What it does is holds a mirror up to the believer and the humiliation is too much to bear, and they become angry and defensive.
They're silly sorts, you know...

Yes He did. In fact, He told the first joke!
There was this man and a woman, and they ate an apple in a Garden 6000 years
ago. And today, 7,000,000,000 people have to go to Hell for it!
GET IT! GET IT!
Don't worry, Nobody gets it!
Political Correctness is due to the Age of Aquarius. Aquarius being the humanitarian
Caring about people. But due to human nature. Emotionalism, taking things to extremes.
It could turn us into humorless tight-@sses!

Sure. And there is even humor when it's not intended.
Recently, I was reading my Bible and came across this gem :
1Samuel 25:23 And when Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her a*s, falling down on her face before him. (1965 Bible in Basic English)
You call that "Basic English"? Remember that the modern word is "donkey", one of the modes of transportation 3 500 years ago.

It depends on the nature of the joke. If they are insulting towards a religious group, then they are bad as other prejudice jokes.

And the other is more of a statement but It is one that I made up so here it is
God is not a name it is a job discription.

Because God made the world he doesn't want us to insult him and his creation. If you made something beautiful, would you want people to insult it and make fun of it with jokes?
