My wife is from Spain and we recently took a vacation to see her family with three of our kids. We stayed with her sister by the beach also for one week. One day we took the kids(1,3,5) down to the ocean a good ten minutes from the villa. I had forgotten swimming trunks for my three yr old so I told him to go in naked. The other two had trunks and all three were playing happily. After about half an hour a British women came over and told me she was apalled to see me putting my son on show the way I was, and that it was abuse to the child.
The beach was quite quiet and I had not want to deprive him of playign with his brothers but after her words I was shocked and i told him to come sit with mom and dad while the others played, he was hysterical as he thought he was being punished, when I let him free I was met with glares from her entire group so my wife and i left the beach for the day. Is it weird that I let him run around naked? What do you think?

I don't think it's weird. You have to remember the woman was British. She wasn't even in her own country and so she should be willing to accepting of differences if she's going to travel abroad. Your wife is from Spain so she should know best if it's acceptable there. I like the idea of having him wear his underwear better, though, but I wouldn't have deprived him of the opportunity to play.

Personally, I don't think it's right to let him run around naked. You could have made a special trip to buy him a new pair. Or even let him go in with underwear and a pair of shorts. If the woman was offended, she may have been nicer about asking you to cover your son.

Then again, I've never been to Spain and I don't know their culture that well. It may be appropriate for them, but I still wouldn't let him out naked.

Honestly, with all the freaks and weirdos out there, I wouldn't let my kids run naked in any public places! If this happens again, just let him play in his clothes and ride home in the car naked. That way he still has fun, no one gets offended and you don't give some perv a free show.

That shouldn't be a problem, but with the kind of perverts around today and the use of camera phones, I would be careful about letting my children play in the nude. I don't think what you did was at all offensive.

No I don't think it is weird or wrong. I would have let him play in his shorts or underwear. I do not think people should say anything to anyone about parenting skills. Last I heard, the perfect parent has yet to be found!

It is not abuse. Lots of people let their little ones go without clothes. It is healthy. However, I wouldn't have let my step son go into the water like that because of health hazards. Did you make sure he didn't catch any diseases??

Although it shouldn't be so, yes, it is a bit wierd that you let the toddler run about naked. Don't let him think it was his bad to be in the buff. Tell him it was your fault for not bringing the swim suit, hot his.

I do not see it as wrong... But some people have no clue. I would have done the same thing and asked the woman to mind her own!
