I agree with the theory of the logical positivists:

Expressed in language, the question is meaningless. This is because "meaning of x" is a term in life usually conveying something regarding the consequences of x, or the significance of x, or that which should be noted regarding x, etc. So when "life" is used as "x" in the term "meaning of x", the statement becomes recursive and therefore nonsensical.

In other words, things in a person's life can have meaning (importance), but a meaning of life itself, i.e., apart from those things, can't be discerned. In this context, a person's life is said to have meaning (significance to himself and others) in the form of the events throughout his life and the results of his life in terms of achievements, a legacy, family, etc. But to say that life itself has meaning is a misuse of language, since any note of significance or consequence is relevant only in life (to those living it), rendering the statement erroneous. Language can provide a meaningful answer only when it refers to a realm within the realm of life. But this is not possible when the question reaches beyond the realm in which language exists, violating the contextual limitations of language. Such a question is broken. And the answer to a broken question is an erroneous or irrelevant answer.

...got another question???

After having read The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, I firmly believe that our purposes are individual quests. Your quest is to find out the purpose only YOU can serve. No one but you.

When you do, you won't believe the peace and joy you will have.
It's true. I did it, and a whole lot of others have too.

What do you want your life - this life - to mean to others and to yourself? And do you have the courage to set out to find out?

Are you more interested in leaving a legacy, or more interested in living in the "Now"? There are so many Cliches` about what life is and the "true meaning of life and while some are toungue-in-cheek they are actually quite apt "Life is what happens while you are waiting for Life to Happen", or the ever popular platitude - "Life is what you make of it".

My challenge to you is a series of questions that you must ask your self upon awakening each day - until you know with absolute certainty that - for the time being at least - you are on the right path, but beware of complacentcy and routine, welcome serendipity and change for they are what will help recharge you with the energy and refresh you with a new sense of curiosity that will renew your vision and keep your dreams alive.

1. Do I have the courage to admit to my self what it is that I truely want to to do with my life, given no-restrictions, it doesn't even have to be considered a "JOB", it doesn't have to pay a "SALARY", you don't have to punch a clock, or wear a uniform - (unless you want to). It can be a solitary pursuit, or a service to all mankind. You just have to PICK SOMETHING THAT IS YOUR HEARTS DESIRE AND SOMETHING THAT YOU KNOW WILL MAKE YOU ABSOLUTELY THE HAPPIEST PERSON ON EARTH. As I say - do not worry if this is not a "recognized "job".

2. Now get up and do it - every day. If you need to find a sponsor - start hitting up friends, family, and goverment grants - the Center for the Arts - whatever. Believe it or not - there is someone out there who will sponsor you. Better yet if what you decide to do is marketable..

3. Ask your self " Do I awaken refreshed, and eager to take up where I lefft of yesterday with this pursuit which I have chosen - or which has chosen me.?"

4. If not - chose again, and again, and again - but LISTEN to your body, your mind, your soul, and your feelings - deep in your gut - what can you handle - if you are failing - stop lying to your self, stop trying to achieve some movie fantasy, or some book-of-the-month nirvana. Your "Meaning of life" may be working at Target on the afternoon shift, marrying the guy with the cute butt and great quads and big. . ., having three adorable daughters with the Man you know you will always love, and you know who will always love you and the girls, a great home with a pool, a cabin up north, a mother in law who's great, going back to school at 33 and getting a college degree in American Romance Novels, and having a great bod at 38.

Maybe the Meaning of life is to become a teacher and teach 5th grade for 50 years, and mold the lives of thousands of kids who will always remeber that you were firm but fair, always made them feel "special' around you, seemed always to have extra time to help them with a difficult problem they just "Could'nt get", Was someone who consoled them when their pet died, Made a big production out of giving you a Gold Star on a story you wrote or a picture you drew. Shared part of your sandwhich with them when they forgot their lucnh on the bus,

And then remember too the time when some of the toughest boys came back years later after they finished their combat tours in Viet Nam or Afghanistan, Kuwait or Iraq, to thank you for being the best teacher they ever had - and they we so thankful that they now had the chance to tell you that when they thought they might never ever say thank you again or I love you to anyone back in the USA, you were one of the people they mosted remembered for her impact on their lives..

So I ask you again - What do you want your life, - this life - to mean to others and to yourself? What will the meaning of your life be? Do you have the courage to set out to find out?
