i've decide to buy a digital slr because photography is something i want to do and learn more about. i'm stuck on what to buy though. i've heard postive things about both nikon and canon but what about the megapixels and lens? *confused*

You probably can't go wrong with either a Nikon or Canon. I own a Nikon D50 and I have friends who swear by their Canon Digital Rebels. I tried both out in a store and settled on the Nikon simply because it fit better in my hand. I found the grip of Canon too small. It also helped that I had been using a Nikon film SLR so maybe there was bias.

If this is your first major camera purchase you might want to consider a non SLR. There are some excellent big lens cameras by Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, etc. The main advantage of an SLR is that you can change lenses. In the days before digital and good zoom lenses this was very important. Now you can find digital cameras with large zoom ranges that will cover most of your needs. SLRs have more moving parts to go wrong and the ability to remove the lens exposes the sensor to dust and other damage. Only if you plan to do nature photography or professional sports photography do you need one of those extreme telephoto lenses. Besides they cost as much as or more than the camera.

As to megapixels, the more you have the bigger you can enlarge your prints or the more you can crop your photos but unless you plan to make prints larger than 8"x10" you shouldn't need more than 5 or 6 megapixels. The more pixels you use the more memory you need to store your images therefore the fewer pictures you can store on the camera's memory chip.

My Nikon has 6 mp and when I shoot at highest JPEG quality I can get over 230 images on a 1 Gb memory chip.

As for lenses if you do get a SLR think about something in the 28mm to 200mm range for starters. These lenses are fairly compact but give you an nice range of magnifications. Later if you stay with the camera you can add lenses at either end for extreme telephoto and wide angle.

When I bought mine I got it on sale for the price of the body. The store threw in a Sigma 28 to 90mm lens which I still use. I plan to get a 28 to 200 lens when my finances recover. But this "cheap" lens gives me very good results.

Megapixels is simple measure of how 'detailed' a picture is. The more MP, the larger the picture and the more detail.

Lens or the optics of a camera help capture the pitcure as you see it. In most SLRs, you can swap out the lens depending on what type of photo you are taking.

All in all you are probably looking at $700+ investment if you buy a Nikon or Canon SLR, which are probably the best bang for you buck.

i have owned several from 100$ to 500$ you get what you payfor like everything else i need more info to help you more sounds like your going for even more $ than 500 if your talking about lenses to attach so anytype that exspensive will be a excelent camera will require more exspereince to operate i love my casio exilim z750 7mp its small easy to use great batterie life great pictures email me if u need more help ok confused eperry61@comcastnet
