Hmmm.... If you're new to red wines, I would recommend a Beaujolais Nouveau or a Pinot Noir. These are good little steps into full bodied red wines.
The Beaujolais Nouveau is a "young" red wine that comes out a week before Thanksgivings (in the US), just in time, with very little tannins so it's a sweeter wine.

Merlot is your best bet. Not too dry or too sweet, mild daste and not too heavy on the alcoholic flavor. Serve it at room temperature and let it air for about 15 min to let it soften (take the cork out and let it sit open on the counter).
The fat bastard wine mentione above is VERY good. It's not too harsh either.

One of the all time favorites is Rosemount Estate Shiraz. It runs for about $11. Both new and old drinker enjoy this one a lot.

Oliver Soft Red is my favorite. It is not as dry (bitter) as a lot of reds I have tasted. If you like sweet, stay away from merlot's.
