Once you tell a guy you like them, they become distant from you? Or is it another reason why they ignore you.

Telling anyone you like them is considered a compliment. So, this fallacy that if you express such feelings to a guy makes them run is just that a fallacy! If a guy is insecure, and feels threatened by an assertive girl then perhaps he may retreat out of fear. The trick is to make guys feel comfortable about you...so a sure fire way to get your point across, ( as in I like you) Is to simply say Mike I think you're a really cool guy, and I like you. I'm glad we're friends! Remember no matter what your age the best relationships start out as friends first....

The reason that they would ignore you after you've said something like that is because the feeling isn't mutual. It's easier to avoid someone than it is to be honest with them. If a guy likes you and you tell him your feelings and he avoids/ignores you, then there are some other emotional issues going on and I would suggest steering clear of that.

Telling a guy you like them does two very important things. It immediately separates out normal from abnormal guys. Normal guys are MORE likely to be attracted to someone who likes them. Abnormal ones lose interest once they know you like them. Since abnormal guys are very abnormal in various other ways (do drugs, crime, hit women, etc.) you want to quickly figure out who they are and get rid of them. It's important to understand what this means. You tell a guy you like him and he loses interest.....he's told you something very valuable about himself. That you don't want him around because he is almost certainly a psychotic loser. This has nothing to do with you and everything to do with him.

The other thing this does is it will immediately engage a normal guy. If he likes you, he will start working toward making you two a couple by getting to know you etc. Men are trained from cradle to grave to initiate everything having to do with relationships. However, in recent generations, men have gotten very neurotic about bothering women who are not interested in them. Worse, women have gotten very neurotic about encouraging men they like (somehow, they think this makes them a whore....geez, you are being nice to a guy, not promising to blow him and his friends in the backseat of his car) This adds up to alot of frustrated people hanging around each other, wanting each other, but not daring to make a move. Telling him you like him, immediately short circuits all this stuff. For men, actually, it's one of the most effective techniques for getting women that there is. The man who can walk up to a woman he likes and tell her, has no competition. Everyone else is sitting in the corner, drooling like a geek, never daring to say anything.

Anyway, the same is true for women. If you can bring yourself to tell the guy you like that you do like him, and he isn't a psychotic freak (warning, some guys are), then you will walk off with that guys while all your friends can do is stare jealously at you, wishing they weren't alone.
