Asking you a hypothetical question is a way of "testing the waters" without putting himself out on a ledge completely. He may be a bit gun shy, and may have been hurt with his break up. He wants to go out with you but he's afraid of being rejected.

I have a feeling that he just want to find someone to talk to. Maybe I guess he took a liking to you. He broke up with his girlfriend I think was just a coincidence.

if he and his girlfriend 'recently broke up', then he doesn't have a girlfriend... he's trying to ask you out. if your interested, say yes, to pick you up at 6:30, if not, then say no, and keep being friends.
