The main blood groups of concern here are the ABO and Rhesus.

The rarest ABO group is AB which is found in ~ 3% of the UK population. It actual frequency does vary depending on you racial background.

The Rhesus groups are generally classified as +'ve or -'ve. You could see this written as DD or Dd for +'ve and dd for -'ve. Rh + occurs in about 92% of the population and Rh- in the remaining 6%.

The rarest group would be AB, Rh- which would be found in about 1 in 500.

However, the Rhesus system is more complex that simple +'v or -'v. It can be broken down into 6 or more Rh groups. The rarest of these is written as Rh2Rh2 and occurs in ~1%.

There are many other blood groups. Some can be important in transfusion but I will leave it here.

According to the 1998 Guinness Book or World Records: Page 365

"The rarest type in the world is a type of Bombay blood (subtype h-h) found so far only in a Czechoslovak nurse in 1961, and in a brother (Rh positive) and in a sister (Rh negative) surnamed Jalbert in Massachusetts, reported February 1968"

It depends on the population you are talking about. In the US, AB- is the rarest. In Asia AB blood types are common and O blood types are rare.

I have heard 2 different things.
O is the most common but O- is the rarest.
I have also heard that AB is the rarest. As far as which is the rarest AB or O- I am not sure.
Not like that really helped.
