Birds eat (like you), they process it (absorb nutrients, pass the waste through the system -like you) and the extra left behind is....poop, which comes out of a hole right in front of their tail (behind their legs) on the underside of their body. This hole is called the "cloaca".

Birds' poop has 3 parts: Feces (the colored, solid part), Urates (the white part) and Urine (the clear watery part). The feces should be brown to brownish green and tubular shaped. The urates can also be mixed in with the feces sometimes, but all three parts come out together at the same time and out of the same hole (the cloaca). Lots of times you have wild bird poop on your car that is just a big splat -- that is mostly because it comes from so high up that when it lands it isn't a shape anymore...just a big splat! Big parrots' poop sometimes looks like that too, but if you look closely it is really formed, like I said above. If a parrot is fed colored pellets or eats certain colored foods (blueberries, beets, lots of green vegetables, sweet potatoes, etc) their feces and sometimes their urine, too, will turn the color of the food or pellets they ate. But, normally it should be that brown or green to brownish green color.

If your bird's poop is not "tubular", but just runny, then it has diarrhea and is very sick -- get it to the vet immediately!! If it's poop is black and it's diet shouldn't have turned it dark, get it to the vet immediately (blood in the feces). If it isn't pooping - to the vet (it isn't eating or it has a blockage caused by another illness). If it's urates (the white) is green or yellow then it is sick, as it is if you see undigested food in the droppings -- you should take it to the vet. Poop tells us lots about birds (and other animals) - if they are eating and if so, what, whether they are healthy, and even more!!

More than you ever wanted to know about birds' poop...huh???
