Martini/wine/piano bars...a bit swankier than local pubs. Also, if your company/institution has conferences or voluntary lectures, go to them and mingle with others afterwards if there's food. Check local listings for talks or lectures that you would find interesting. These things typically have a post-talk social function or if you ask questions or make comments, people may approach you aftwards to 'discuss' your thoughts.
