Chew gum or any thing you can chew for the length of time you need to cut onion. Please dont waste water by leaving the faucet on as most of these people have said !

The onion juices evaporate and spread and also the cutting action causes them to spray. This produces an invisible cloud (onion gas?) that stings.Any way to reduce this helps. Try chopping underwater either flowing or in a water filled bowl. Alternatively try putting in the onions in a freezer for a whle first (not so long as to actually freeze them). Then when chopping the particles of moisture will have less energy to spread out from the onion.

Eyedoc is correct. Cut off the root end first, then the top. Remove the skin and start chopping.
I was helping my friend prepare a family dinner and she was really tearing up. I took an onion, cut off the ends, and no tears. Taught her this trick and she hasn't cried since.
If you don't believe me, watch some of the chef's on TV. They chop onions and never cry. If you look, they always cut off the root end before peeling!

Peel them under running water or in a large bowl filled with water. Chop them in a food processor instead of by hand.

Simple just soak the onions in ice water for about 2 to 3 hours.

Try running the onion under cold water before you chop it. I've tried different things, but this worked really good for me.

Get a sharper knife -- a dull knife might be what's keeping you crying.
Also, check out the frozen foods section of your grocery store. If you look by the frozen peas and corns, many stores are now carrying frozen, diced onion as well. If you love the taste of onions but hate preparing them, this might be the solution for you.
