As long as there was a serious not a silly tone to it,
it means "I want to take care of you".
It means you're precious to him.
If he's never kissed you any other way before (as your question implies), it probably also means he thinks your friendship is way too special to risk breaking without confirmation from you that you like him back.
Good luck with this one, he's a deep soul and sounds like a "keeper" I think.

That he's taller than you and it was hard to get to your cheek. It means he wants to kiss you but doesn't feel comfortable going for the mouth, it's equavalent to a cheek kiss. Now if a man who has children kisses you on the forehead, it means something completely different, it means he thinks you're too young.

It probably means he wants to see what your reaction is so that next time he can kiss you on the lips? I don't know I'm not a guy i don't know how they think
