You can buy an Industrial grade polyurithane for high traffic areas that is self leveling and wont leave any brush or roller marks. To acheive that really glassy shine you need to buy some powdered wood putty the same color as your finish and mix it to a watery consistancy, you then brush it into all the wood and let it dry over night, the next day you sand it down with a fine sand paper and vacum up all the dust, you then take a tack cloth and wipe everything down to make sure you get every particul of dust before applying your first coat of polyurithane. Brushing this watery wood putty mix on the wood fills the grain so that the wood doesnt soak up the polyurithane.
You should sand between each coat of polyurithane with 1200 grit paper. The more coats you put on the more shine you get. Usualy 2 coats is enough but i have applied 3 to 4 coats for some furnishings we did for McDonalds, Hardees and BurgerKing back when they had a lot of wooden table tops and chairs.
When you are sanding always make sure you sand with the grain and not across the grain or you will see all the sand marks after your finish drys and the only way to fix it will be to sand everything back down to bare wood.

Use gloss varnish. Marine spar varnish, the kind used for trim on boats is the glossiest.

I think you will be disapointed. The gloss does not hold up well, and the finish will look dingy before too long.

i hope you sanded it to about a 300 grit sand paper before you stained it. after you do that it will need about 4 or 5 coats of polyurethane lacquer.

Gloss laquer or clear coat is the one that will provide the best gloss.
