Latin is the ancestor of all those languages you mentioned, as well as Portuguese. Publius Vergilius Maro, or Vergil (original Latin spelling) was a poet - he was born in 70 BC, and died in 19 BC before he finished the Aeneid. The name probably did not originate with him, but he certainly made it famous.
