In the 1970's the PLO, the Palistenian Liberation Organazation took refuge in Lebanon, and were launching attacks on the Isreali's from there, in 1978 and then 1982 Isreal invaded and succedded in driving the PLO from Lebenon, but when Isreal invaded, the lebanese themselves resisted and formed the Group Hezbollah, a guerilla fanatical religous group, and launched a guerilla campaign against the Isreali's, Isreal maintained a ten mile buffer zone within lebanon from 1982 until 2000, and Hezbollah always resisted Isreal within this territory until the U.N. brokered a peace agreement in 2000 and the Isreali's withdrew, but Hezbollah which was formed to resist the Isreali's no longer had a war to fight, they did not disband, instead they claimed the sheeba farms territory,(which was really part of Syria) as an occupied part of Lebanon, so they would not have to disband, and continued to attack and harass Isreal, and the reason they were fighting with Isreal this summer is because Hezbollah kidnapped two Isreali soldiers, which caused Isreal's response to punish Hezbollah for their actions, so Lebanon and Isreal are not actually fighting Isreal and Hezbollah are, not to mention the Lebanese army is a joke.
Though it is much more complicated that this, you might want to look it up on Wikipedia, alot of the Problems between the two go back to the very formation of Isreal, most arabs (an understatement) believe that Isreal itself should not exist, and this is the real root of the problem, this is it in a nutshell though like I said it is so much more complicated than what I've said.

Actually- strange as it may seem- they are not fighting.
Lebanon is not a side to the conflict. The problem is that since it has been taken over by muslims in general and Syrians in particular, it does not control it's southern borders- which were handed over first to the PLO and now to Hezbollah.
Syria and hezbollah use this lebanese land as a springboard to attack Israel, then lebanon's muslim rulers scream when the Israelis dare to hit back.
Three reasons?
Syria
Iran
Hezbollah
