I work for a company who has an employee in need of their W-2 forms from 1995 to 1998. I was wondering if there is any other way to find them, perhaps online through the IRS, so I do not have to spend a whole day in the back of a dark, dirty trailer. Please help if you can....Thanks!

As far as I am concerned, that is way too long ago for you to spend time digging them up. It is past the time frame that you need to keep records for.... Have the employee contact the IRS... even they may not have the records still. (They will have to call the IRS.)

Why do they need W-2s from that long ago anyway?

The IRS can for a fee supply the information. What I do when someone doesn't know there income for a given year, particularly that year is that I have them come into my office. I then call the Practioner line with the IRS, they send all the income info for the taxpayer. You have to do the same thing with the state agency.

When I did bookkeeping for a real estate developer I kept all the quarterly and annual P/R reports in a seperate binder by year. Granted, if you have them in a binder they may be archived being that old, I always kept those handy as a LOT of people request copies years after the fact.

The law is clear, you have to provide them a copy once it is by grace that you give additional copies. So no worries. Its not as easy for the taxpayer to get the info, they make it much easier for a professional.

As a professional in the industry I can get the info for free provided the client is in my office. The IRS does not give you copies...they give a print out with the information that most people can't understand....

It' amazing that I have this same problem and I need mine for years 1998-2001. I 'll share what I have done. There is a problem alert system for the IRS.People can use it when the have tried and any other avenue and have had no resolution. It's like a "911"
and they have to resppond to you with in a certain amount of time. Find it on the IRS web site. Also try your local Social Security Office they do it for a fee (ABOUT $29.95 PER)

go to IRS.gov and fill out a form 4506-T. Call the IRS at 1800-829-1040 and tell them you need to fax it to them. Just be sure to have the employee there to answer any questions the IRS may have. they do 3 attempts in 48 hours and after that, they will mail it to the employee.
