Ok, let's do a variation on your mom's dump cake. Break up the cake and set the pieces aside in a bowl. Now, make some instant chocolate pudding. Get creative- add little chocolate sprinkles and swirls of hot fudge to it. Now pour the pudding over the pieces of cake in the bowl and stir it gently. Have the party guests eat it like a pudding. It will taste awesone and it will also look like you did that on purpose. Call it "cake soup" or something like that!

I think I'd try doctoring them. Cut off the top with a long bread knife so that they are mostly level. Then, slop in the butter cream, ganache, or coconut-pecan frosting (if you like German Choclate). Add the second layer and frost them all around. If all fo the parts taste good and taste good together, you should be able to salvage something.
Or, what about petite fours (sp?) Cut up pieces and frost or glaze all around. Don't tell anyone about your cake-baking issues, either. You should really check the temperature of your oven for future use ... it sounds like it's not really baking at the temperature you set it at. (Mine bakes 50 degrees hotter and I had to ruin several things before I figured it out.)
Good Luck!

Serve one of them with ice cream, or cherries with whipped cream. Have the pieces already cut and on serving plates. Triffle cakes are very easy. Get a big punch bowl or something like it, mix up chocolate and vanilla puddings, and layer it with oreos, pieces of the cakes, bananas, anything that would go well together. Use whipped topping on the very top and it'll look like you meant to make that all along! Good luck!

Are you making a 2 tier or 2 layer cake? in case you're making a 2 layer cake with filling in the middle you need to use a 10 inch by making use of three inch deep cake pan. you will choose 3 containers of cake combination, you may combination all 3 containers collectively in case you have a huge mixer. .you could need one million/2 of the batter for each layer. persist with the container classes, this provides you with a 2 layer cake. in case you have the opt to make a 2 tier cake do the comparable as above plus a 6 inch by making use of two-3 inch deep cake on acceptable, you will choose one extra cake container combination for the 6 inch cake, one cake combination could be sufficient for 2 small 6 inch tarts. wish this enables, i've got made this 2 tier cake many circumstances....

Whip up a big batch of heavy cream, sweeten it a bit with confectioners sugar, add a bit of vanilla extract. Make a big chocolate cake sandwich with the whipped cream in the middle. Then frost the whole thing. Refrigerate until ready to serve. You could even make hot fudge sauce to serve over each portion

Just cut the tops off both and then cream the middle and ice the top. Put the top cake on upside down so you have a surface to ice. No one will ever know.

Cut the cake in squares, put them on pretty plates and top each square with ice cream or whipped cream and caramel sauce or chocolate sauce and sprinkle some chopped nuts. Sounds yummy and no one will know the goof up!

Make a trifle--
Crumble the cake and layer it with cool whip, chocolate pudding and toffee bits. Do three equal layers ending with cool whip and sprinkle a few toffee bits on top of it. Looks very nice in a glass bowl.
