PBS had a great documentary on him, I'm glad I was able to pull this up: http://www.pbs.org/muhammad/timeline_html.shtml

Many Islamic websites tell about his life:
http://www.cair.com/Muhammad/
http://www.al-islam.org/lifeprophet/
http://www.islam-guide.com/ch1-6.htm

Wiki also gives a detailed view:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammed

And if you are a reader, there are two great books I would recommend: The Sealed Nectar, and The Life of Muhammad by Haykal.

The reason I give these links is because the stories of his life are so detailed and it would take a very long post to include all of the important highlights of his life, both before and during prophethood. I wouldn't rely so much on some of the answers you are bound to get here, especially those filled with a muddy mix of ignorance and hate. If people stopped wasting their time on the two and replaced it with learning and just a little bit of knowledge, they'd be better off themselves. But, oh well. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink, right?

Good luck on your studies!

Salam!
It is true that the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is so enormous that it is impossible to put it perfectly in few words but God Willing, i'll highlight some parts of his life in brief.

Basically before he was even born, his father passed away. He was raised in the desert of course and his mother, Aminah, also passed away when he was 6 years old. His grandfather took him in and after him, his uncle Abu Talib took care of him. As a young boy and man, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stayed away from troubles that usually caught the attention of youth of his age. He was, from the beginning, truthful and honest and kind.

To help his uncle, he started trading. He was a honest trader. So when one of the wealthiest woman, Khadija (RA), asked him to do trading for her, he accepted her offer. Unknown to him, she sent one of her slave on the trading journey with Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) to watch him. When he came back, the slave told Khadija (RA) about the amazing personality of Prophet Muhammd (PBUH), which convinced her to propose to him. And that's what she did. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) generously accepted her offer after consutling his uncle evenn though he was 25 and she was 40. And so they were married. He was faithful and loyal to her and she was the backbone and support of each of his cause.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to go to the cave of hira to ponder of Allah's Creation and worship Him. So one day, he felt a presence in the cave and the presence was that of Angel Jibraeel (Gabriel) who came to bring him the first revelation of the Qur'an. From there it became his duty to preach to his people about the one God. As much as makkans loved him, they turned against him and those who followed him. They put him and his believers on hunger strike in the farther part of Makkah so nobody could go to them and receive his message. There the believrs amongst their prophet lived on leaves and sometimes someone would bring food to them out of mercy.

When Makkans finally freed them, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)'s dearest wife and uncle (who supported him the most) passed away. That was the saddest year for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Makkans became happy cause now Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was alone. They began torturing his believers and him. They would throw trash in his way and annoy him when he prayed, but he didn't do anything.

Finally, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers migrated to Madina where they were greeted with open arms and cheers. That's where Islam began to flourish. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) became their leader and guided them. There were some major wars with the Makkans (battle of khandaq and badr, etc.) and Muslims finally returned back to Makkah where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forgave his enemies.

This is the most brief i can go. It's a very long story that probably no pages of a book can hold to its true beauty.

But i hope this will help you, inshallah (God Willing).
