For around $40-ish:
Trefethen Cabernet Sauvignon is my new best friend. Nice velvety cab...very smooth.

If you want to bring a dessert wine, a really good one is Elysium Black Muscat. Dark red, sweet and very tasty. Around $18-ish

Also, one of the better ports you can find, Taylor-Fladgate 20 year tawny port. Can't say much...too busy drooling :) Right around your $50 cutoff, but well worth it.

A good thing to look into that is always a hit is Mead. From Redstone Meadery or any mead for that matter. It is a honey wine of types but it has a taste that everyone will love. It only cost 15.00. But it is the greatest thing that I and all my guests have ever tasted. The boysenberry is my personal favorite.
Also, Voga which is a zifandel/ Reisling. It is always a safe bet. It is an Italian wine.

im a white wine guy so i'd say Gewurstaminer is my favorit....there are alot of good wines but this one stays always one of my favorites. It tastes good with every dishes, not too strong (i mean on its flavor), you can even eat some meat, and it's really classy. In restourants you wont find it really easly (expecially in america) and if you do it would cost you good money, if you find it separately you should pay it an average from 40$ to 50 something$.
hope i was helpful (if help was needed in this case)

I always find one with a quirky name, 2 Dogs Peeing on a Mulberry Bush (yes, that's an actual wine) or a pretty label. I don't know anything about wine, but a fun name always captures people's attention. I get mine at World Market or a liquor store.

My favorite bottle of wine is YELLOWTAIL(shiraz). I love this red wine because it is a dry, very tasteful wine; and the cost is only about 9.00 dollars; and i think that Australia has the best tasting wine.
