First, it is not odd that you can't tan. Millions of people get little to no tan in the sun. Tanning occurs when skin cells called melanocytes react to sunlight, and produce melanin. Melanin turns brown in sunlight. All races have the same number of melanocytes in their skin, but fair skinned people have very few of them "turned on". You can't change this.

Second, those little bumps could be a reaction to photo-sensitive medication (many antibiotics, for example) or it could simply be your own skin's reaction to real cell damage (commonly called sun poisoning).

Third, yes, a tanning bed will produce substantially the same result, so don't bother.

I think you have to accept yourself as you are, and here is how to make the best of it: Use sunscreen on a daily basis to keep your skin healthy and beautiful, and yes, pale. Don't use self-tanners on a daily basis, as they just add to the amount of chemicals on your skin and seldom look natural. If you go to the beach and just don't feel comfortable being the whitest person there, try self-tanners only then, and only in small amounts. Also remember that self-tanners provide only color, not protection from the sun, so be sure to wear sunscreen too. I know it can be hard to be pale when the world around you glamorizes tanning, but for you and many others, a healthy pale skin tone is the way to go.

whoa....... 1. you'll probably get a change after one visit, just make sure you don't go in too long and get burnt! 2. I would say around 5-7 visits depending on the strength of the bulbs at the tanner you're going to. 3. Tanning beds give you a comparable tan. 4. I would always tan in the sun if I had time! You can always do both. 5. Tans from a bed last a while once you have been regularly going I would say about a week before you are going back to normal. 6. Nothing really happens after you tan in either place except that it eventually will wear off or if you get burnt it will peel off. Thats why you have to go fairly regularly and for appropriate amounts of time.

If you don't tan in the sun, you probably won't tan in a bed either. Be happy being pale! If not...then try a sunless tanner. Try Jergens natural glow... i've used it and like it, and it also acts as a moisturizer. It's not too drastic, actually gets more dramatic with use, and doesn't have that funky orange tint. Don't forget to wash your hands after applying though!

Stay out of the sun and tanning beds though, cancer and alligator skin isn't worth it.

Don't tan your skin. It's very bad for your skin as well as your health. Going to a tanning salon will not solve your problems with this. If anything it will probably make you look worse. I don't tan because I'm a black female that is blessed with a tan complexion. However, If I had pale skin I would be proud and happy of it. I would not do anything to put my health at risks. Be proud of your white skin. Tanning does not make a person look better, all that is does is make your skin darker.

In the tanning bed you have a little bit more control, however, what you are explaining is a heat rash. These actually tend to be worse in most tanning beds. Some stand up beds have strong fans and prevent your skin from overheating while you tan. There are also beds that have strictly UVA rays (the ones that don't burn) they are much more expensive to lay in, but work quite well.

A tanning bed would probably do the same thing. If you haven't tried the spray (mystic) tan, you may want to give it a try. And then use a self tanning gradual lotion (jergens makes a great one) and the tan will last longer.

i would suggest getting a good fake tanning lotion and stay out of the sun. those "bumps and blisters" that itch sound like sun poisoning and that is very dangerous.

I guess you've got fair skin like me, give up trying for a real tan (cancer and early aging) and get some fake tan.

Are you taking any kind of medication or over the counter water pills? Some medications will make you sun sensitive.

If not, then it sounds as if you have a allergy. Check with your doctor.
