when we went it was so easy to use, that was back in march. it cost us somewhere between 5 and 10 euros to get a 24 hour pass for each of us, unlimited usage. the main thing is knowing where you want to go before hopping on. then just paying attention and knowing which way the line is running. we spoke no italian and we easily figured out where we need to go and how to get back.

I've never taken the Rome subway so I can't make a comparison, here is a quick explanation of the Parisian metro system: There's 14 lines in Paris metro, numbered from 1 to 14. Each line has a colour assigned to it as well as a number. When you want to know which line to take from a particular station look at a metro map, you follow the line to the end and will see the number and the name of the last station of the line. When you are in the metro corridors you look at the signs and will see the number and a name, this is the name of the last station of the line. Let's say you are taking line 1 (colour yellow) from the station Louvre and you want to go to the Etoile station westward. In that direction the line ends at "La Défense". So you look for signs that say 1 La Défense and follow them to the train platform. The "1" will be in a yellow circle. In addition to the metro lines which don't go further than the borders of Paris you have local train lines called RER crossing Paris and stopping at some station. They are easily recognised as they have letters instead of numbers. They work on the same system as the metro, the letter and the last station of the line. On the map the lines representing them are thicker than the metro ones. The train are faster but there's much less stops inside Paris than a metro.

It's really very ease, because there are only 2 subway lines in Rome, the A line and the B line. Tickets cost 1 Euro, but you can get week-end tickets or weekly tickets, which are more conveniently priced.
