I have a 7 year old collie shetland mix. I want him to be more socialable (in a good way) towards other dogs. Is it too late?

I have owned dogs all of my life and it is never too late. We rescued an adult dog that had the same problem. I kept exposing her to other dogs and rewarded her for good behaviour and gently repremanded her for bad behaviour until she got it. I can now trust her to behave around other dogs.

I keep learning new and better ways to train my dog. Ceasar Millan, The Dog Whisperer that is shown on National Geographic, shows how to "train the owner" to help their dog get over any problem. I use his methods and have had excellant results. I have a new puppy as well and started him off with his training methods. He is doing so well. Patience and exposure to new situations in a relaxed, confident way is the best way to have your pet overcome his unsociable behavior.

I have attached two links to Cesar Millan.

It is possible to teach new things to older dogs however, social behavior amongst other dogs is something that even the most friendly dog tends to lose tolerance for with age. So getting an older dog to behave well with others is tricky.

I would suggest obedience training in a facility where groups of dogs train together. Learning to obey and listen to you when there are other distractions, like other dogs, is very helpful.

I would also stick to a neutral area. Dogs are very territorial and bringing other dogs into your dog's living space is not a good idea. Most dogs will tolerate young puppies in their space but not another adult dog.

Be sure you are familiar with the correct ; safe ways to break up a dog fight just in case.

Also, showing your dog more attention when you are with other dogs to assure them of your affection can lead to them being more protective of you and therefore less sociable.

you can always teach dogs. they are just not as receptive to newer stimuli as they age but still very open to be taught a new routine. Specially with Collies, they are so receptive, so open and so ready to please their humans. Reward for doing the behavior you want them to learn but do not punish for them doing the opposite. Positive reinforcement is a must in this situation.
