If I understand the 'cutters' thought process here's how it goes...

For a person with a deep depression and/or stress, their life seems to be consumed by the other things going on around them and therefore they tend to 'lose the connection' between themselves and the 'real world'. By cutting themselves, the pain associated is the method they use to pull themselves 'out of the fog' and back to a place where the are more concious of the world around them.

So... when a person cuts themselves in this fashion, the pain of the first cut maybe competely masked by their non-ability to focus on reality. As they continue to make additional cuts the pain intensifies and their focus returns. The more cuts they make the more difficulty they are having in keeping their depression and stress at bay. 'Cutters' tend to increase their own physical abuse over time as their ability to cope is not being enhanced by the cutting process, but instead masking the problem. Thus the longer the problem persist, the more cuts have to be made.

Therefore, even a single cut is a strong signal of problems that can easily escalate and rise out of control. True 'Cutters' never do so for attention but because of their inability to cope with a bad situation and therefore even 1 cut is too many.

If you are your friend has this 'habit', please seek counseling and help.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Well thats not true...see someone now.... I know it is easier said than done
I should know...it took me 4 years before I went to see someone

Cutting is wrong. You cut in the wrong spot, and your done. And of course you'd be to embaressed to tell someone if you were seriously bleeding beacuse you did it by cutting yourself. Sometimes you don't do it for attention, but to feel good, find a new hobbie. Try soccer :D

No I never cut myself, but my youngest daughter did I could'nt understand why, I tried everything untill I finally took her to a Dr. after a series of tests and 2 more Dr.s We found out she is bi-polar, it explained alot of her other behavier also, that was 7 years ago she was 13 when she started and now she's fine. (as long as she takes her medications). Please go to a Dr. it might be something else, but so called "normal" people don't cut theirselves. Good Luck and God bless.

I only did it three times in the last 3 yrs, and those weren't really cuts, more like scratches that really hurt. (cat scratches and etc.) I only did it cause my dad was being verbally abusive and I needed to concentrate on something else to make the pain go away.
