Are physical capabilities (seeing a drink is empty, knowing how to mix specific drinks) more, less, or equally important to personality (smile, remembering your name and drink, being able to "shoot the bull" etc) ..
Opinions ?

Being upbeat and friendly w/o making people wait for a drink while you chat with someone else.
High energy. Effervescence!
Make everyone you serve feel like they're interesting, funny, important.
Good eye contact.
Create an air of fun. I have a friend who charged everyone up so much at the bar she worked in people felt like they'd had a mini vacation while in her presence.
(as a function of that her tips were amazing)

My dad's friend told me I should become a bartender becuz I have a good personality, but I told him that would not be a good idea, because I really don't follow sports and that could be key at some place like TGI Friday's or another bar where they always have a basketball, football, or baseball game on. He said it wouldn't matter. If you can smile, like you mentioned, listen to what they have to say, ask them if they want another drink when their glass is empty (and occasionally cut them off, hehe), treat them like you've seen them there before even if you haven't, etc., you can be a good bartender. If they ask you about a game and what team you think will win and you know nothing of sports like me, you could turn the question around and just say, "I'm not sure, what do you think," and most likely, they will go on and on about who and why they think so and so will win. I'd start out at a bar that has other bartenders though cuz that way you aren't not paying attention to the other paying customers when you can't seem to get this guy/girl to stop talking so you can go about your duties. Good luck!

Shooting the best bull, serving the strongest drinks, and laughing at all the drunk's joke's. That's the secret to being a good bartender.

One who is observing, and quick to see you need service, a good & fast drink mixer and one who has a nice and welcoming attitude. One where you feel you get a bit of attention, instead of feeling like "just another person who needs a beer".... ish...

Big smile, courtesy, quick service, knowing what and how to pour and a great body would definitely help. Wit too.
