The ones I've seen tend to be snappish and only bond closely to one person. But every dog is different and you may find a nice one, ask lots of questions of whoever you get it from.

Consider a shelter mutt. They come in all sizes and shapes and make the best pets. They are inexpensive, temperment tested and come with lots of "extras". You save a life too.

Good luck.

I have a Chessie and I can tell you they are sweet, wonderful dogs. They are also very, very strong and exuberant, so you need to be very diligent in training the dog not to jump up, because they are all chest and they will knock your kids over.

Biggest positive - their personalities. I've heard several other Chessie owners say that once you've been loved by a Chessie, you'll never have another breed of dog, and I believe it. Bogey is my second one, and I can't imagine NOT having a CBR in my life. They are sweet and loving, affectionate, smart, playful, and generally awesome.

Biggest negative - they are stubborn and if you don't train them right to start with, you'll have a helluva time retraining the mistakes out of them. Mine has me trained quite well.

One thing not everyone knows - they "grin" with one side of their face. It looks like a sneer. That's why my dog is Bogey - named after Humphrey Bogart, a fellow one-sided grinner. This is not a snarl, or any kind of aggressive posturing. It's just something they do.

OMG! Why do you say "negetives"? There ARE no negetives to Chesapeake Bay Retrievers! I have 1 purebred Chesapeake, and one Chesapeake-Bay-Retriever Chocolate Lab mix! They're great! In my whole life, I've probably had about 5 Chesapeakes...and they're all awesome!

Positives:
---They're great companions!
---If you want a good bonding dog, they are real good bonders with one or two people!
---They're beautiful!
---They love water, even if they're taking baths!
---They're very playful!
---They have really soft mouths!
---They like little dogs, and don't play rough with them!
---There's more, that I just can't think of right now!

Negetives:
---There are none!

The Chesapeake is a retriever, retrievers are extra effective watch canines than safeguard canines(Watch canines bark, safeguard canines will attack if mandatory). so some distance as retrievers circulate nonetheless, the Chesapeake is larger appropriate for this than others. No canines could properly be used for the job of secure practices till they have been professionally experienced to nonetheless. they are additionally extra obdurate than their different retrieving cousins. this may lead them to be harder to coach. usually, retrievers are solid with little ones, yet there is not any assure. ALL canines breeds could desire to be socialized, experienced and dealt with wisely.

The only negative I see is the house cat. Cats belong in the barn, dogs, due to superiority to cats, live in the house.

Positives: They love to play.

Negative: They shed, my friends dog actually rolls around in mud, -- his name is muddy.

Personally it really depends on the owner how his/her pet behaves and what you want.. And of course there are exceptions, (the pet may just be nuts)
