When doing chrunches my neck starts to hurt after doing about 40. I don't put my hands behind my neck or anything (they are generally crossed at my chest or at my sides). Am I doing them wrong, or is it just something I got to get used to?

try to relax, it sounds like you're holding you neck very tensely and if you keep doing this, you'll pull something. so just try to hold it a little more loose and just relax it

keep your hand lightly behind your head and when you come up in the crunch lead your head up with your nose and keep your head straight up and down, don't look forward

I was taught to do it with my arms crossed at my chest, too. I don't do too many reps. I was told, after I pull myself up, hold the position through a few normal breaths, then lower. Also, when you are doing the exercise, pretend you have a grapefruit under your chin. Don't drop your chin toward your chest. Your neck isn't supposed to hurt.

Give yourself time. Learning proper form takes time. I get this complaint from so many of my clients. Its all about the position of the neck...............

Best of luck and keep with it, you will get it right :)
Many blessings ~i~
