My church says sexual relations are only permitted between those who are "legally and lawfully" wedded.
Married in another religion? Fine. Married by a non-religious leader? Fine. As long as it's a marriage recognized by the state, then by my religion's definition, those two people are married.

Well I think you are officially married once you have a marriage license before that all the ceremonies are worthless. So to answer your question, people who have marriage certificates are really married, everyone else..with their commitment ceremonies and religious ceremonies are not unless they get a marriage license. Really thats the true way of getting married all the other stuff (Getting married in a church) is just so your God can recognize the union.

In most all states of the US it is the right of two consenting adults to make the decision to have sex, married or not. That is the legal right, if you are asking about religions, however, you have first to determine which religion you are connecting with and then you have to determine if you are willing to subscribe to the doctrine as dictated by the leadership of that organization. Their view may be divinely inspired, but it is still the words of men. Hope this helps.

Actually, only Abrahamic lineage of religions say that. Most Eastern religions don't compel that, but they DO compel responsibility to the actions one has chosen, eg.one moment of pleasure resulting in a 9 month treasure....,
but many cultures throughout time has been influenced by the former and it is now an accepted part of society and culture.

Marriage is a religious institution, so people who want to be married, should be willing to follow the rules of that religion, whichever one they pick.

You are really married if you have a legal marriage certificate. Anything else is religious only and only valid in your particular religion.

Anyone who signs a marriage certificate and files it with the county or state they live in is married, regardless of what religion or what kind of ceremony.

civil unions are recognised by God.....the clergy has to have a civil license to marry people so that it will be lawful.
In some countries all they do is walk down the street together and they are married.
Some just have to jump over a broom..whatever the local custom is...they are legally married.
