Take a look at the reviews on http://www.steves-digicams.com/ (which also has price comparisons, and shows you what the cameras can do)
A few selections you might wanna take a look at:
Fuji Finepix A350

Last years' model, so price will have gone down a fair bit........ and I have the next one down, the A345 (4.1MP) which takes real good pictures. You may want to get at least a 128MB memory card + some 2100mAh high capacity rechargable batteries to go with it.

I bought the Kodak 3.2 MP and it works great. It also has a good zoom. I took the money I saved by not buying a higher Mega Pixel camera and bought the highest memory chip I could get for the camera. The one that came with the camera held only about a dozen photos. Now I can take over 500 photos or over half an hour video on the chip. A friend of mine bought a higher mega pixel camera and she was changing the batteries all the time. Cost a fortune and was a pain on vacation. She changed the setting back to 3MP, noticed no difference in photo quality and saves on batteries. Unless you plan to blow your photos up to room size, a 3MP camera will be more than OK and it will not break the bank.

I think brand names is not what you need to concentrate on but the number of pixels the more pixels the better the picture. Zoom is important and storage for your pictures. I got a Fuji camera and it takes great pictures but I purchased it few years ago and the pixel count is low compared to what is available today. The memory is it's biggest problem. I can get only 11 to 12 high quality pictures on one memory chip. Bummer while on vacation and no way to down load them and clear memory for more pictures. I recommend going to a store with several brands and compare features verses price. Take notes and then go to eBay and find a good deal on the one with best features for the money. Information before you buy makes after the purchase more enjoyable. Snap away and enjoy.

look for cannon or Nikon... they take awesome pix and are not too expensive... look for them on ebay, and make a bid...
