They are called divider lines And just for your knowledge, the lines are 10 feet long and there is 40 feet between them on most highways as per the Department of Transportaion guidelines. I know it doesn't seem like it but if you care to chance it, get out and measure one.

These lines are there for a very good purpose.They divide the highway and are there for safety purposes. A solid line indicates that you should not pass another vehicle, if the line is broken you may pass if the coast is clear.

It is called the white center line. When you see a yellow line on your side of the road it means, no passing. DO not pass on a yellow line. The yellow line is found only on the secondary roadways. Your major four lane higways, do not have a yellow line. Only the two lane roadways, have the yellow line.
