It really depends. If you want to take professional looking picutres, I recommend the Canon Rebel. It's a mix of manual and digital. You take the pic manually, but then it shows up on the screen. It takes incredible pictures, and doesn't make you waste money on film.
It may be a bit expensive, but believe me, it pays for itself.

You could find a very good SLR film camera for peanuts now. Many people started serious photography with a 35mm film SLR and a 50mm lens. Of course, even though start up would be cheap, you would have to pay for film and processing and would not get the instant feedback that digital would give you.

You could get an entry level digicam with auto everything. Wouldn't learn much about the technical side of photography, but you could practice lighting and composition. That would be the cheapest route in the short term. Some digicams have more manual control than others, but most of them have limits in one area or another.

Or you could spring for a digital SLR. Canon, Nikon & Olympus all have a reasonably priced entry level dslr You could start with the kit lens, and add better lenses and accessories as you progress. The Canon Digital Rebel and the Nikon D50 are both good cameras. You should be able to get set up for under $900, including a big media card and the kit lens.

Try www.dpreview or www.stevesdigicams for reviews, ratings, and features for many different cameras. Good luck!

A digital because you can take more pictures without having to buy film over and over again!

I love digital you can see your pics before you pay for them to be developed and you don't have to buy film just erase and shoot again plus you can see what the shot looks like right then and hopefully do it over if ya messed up.
