Absolutely not. I'm LDS and have been my whole life, and never once have we been instructed by any of our leaders to do so. Anyone who does does so by personal choice and not due to encouragement from the leaders.

Please only accept as fact the answers that come from people who are Mormon. There are a lot of biased opinions out there, and a lot of hearsay. For example, ever heard that Mormon's aren't allowed to dance or drink caffeinated drinks? Both completely untrue.

I should also add that our church is set up in such a manner that each member has a responsibility. Mine is president of the children's organization. Others have Sunday school teacher, bishop, etc. This means we teach one another. Just because someone has heard someone say something at some time or another DOES NOT make it an actual teaching of the Church. Usually it's just the opinion of the person who happens to be teaching the lesson at the time.

No. While some individual members may prefer this, there is no interference from the church is such trivial and personal matters as this. This practice may occur, but is not sanctioned by the church, in areas with larger LDS populations. Some members also try to patron businesses that are not open on the Sabbath day. You must remember, however, that there are LDS people all around the world and it would be utterly impossible to patron only LDS run businesses.

I hope this helps.

No. There is no church doctrine explicit or implicit which says we should only do business with other Mormons. However, many "mom & pop" businesses probably do rely heavily on their friends and family to help them out when they're first getting started. The same can be said about Mormon owned businesses. Having said that, I do know of some hotels that will give a price break to people who are staying there just to go to the temple. I can only assume they are member owned hotels, although I've never stayed in one.

My dad is an ex-mormon, and he was told to try to use other mormon businesses. But I think all religions do it, because when he became a fundy, I heard the same stuff from the pulpit. "Try to use other christian business people. We should help each other...etc"

No, they tend to be patrons of Mormon run businesses simply because they are more comfortable doing business with people they know.

I would think it is only natural to try to do that. I know Catholics try to do that too. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
