It could be: 1) urachal fistula, 2) omphalomesenteric remnants or 3) just an infection (but infections usually hurt). Basically, before birth we have arteries and veins that cross the umbilicus carrying blood from the mother to the baby. They are suppose to close during the first days of life. Sometimes they failure to close and stay opened allowing material to drain from the intestines or urinary system. Also some bacterias could pass from the outside and cause infections. It is not a serious problem but it needs to be treated. Surgery is the only definitive way to treat.

It sounds like a fungal/yeast infection. Sweat might be causing the area to stay moist enough to allow such a microorganism to grow, and cleansing with most soaps wouldn't help much, no matter how hard you try. Barring an actual problem with your umbilicus/belly button (like an incomplete closure, which I suspect would have made its presence felt long before now), I would imagine that a topical anti-fungal or yeast infection treatment would be what you're looking for. Since you're already going to the doctor, I would imagine that's what he/she will prescribe for you.

It can be a fungus, the same one that causes jock itch. It will have a really gross odor if that's the cause, but it's easy to treat...just put some athlete's foot ointment on a cotton swab and stick it in your belly button a couple of times a day. Don't worry, it's not your belly opening up...you're not going to have guts coming out of your belly button...I'm bigger than some people and I have a deep belly button, and once or twice I've gotten what you're talking about, and it always cleared up with an anti-fungal ointment.

My guess would be a yeast infection. Same dark damp conditions. We think of athletes foot as red cracked skin, but in extreme conditions it looks like white mold growing on and between the toes.
