Whenever I am praying I am meant to think about nothing (especially what has happened during the day , books, films etc) everything but the prayer should be forgotten.

However I find that at some point I start thinking about random things such as something that happened that day, a song or a person who I heard something about that day.

Examples:

I am reading and then I remember my sister said her friend has discovered the actress in Mean Girls, the blonde girl and he saw her in the Wedding Crashers and now he won't stop going on about her. Then 2 hours later I am reading and I remember that. Then I think to myself don't think about that again. Then it becomes a game, not to think about it. Then I have to stop myself at all cost not to think about it again. Obviously then it becomes more tempting and harder.

Or I start thinking about my degree, uni, food etc. Usually it is something on TV or something that happened. I can't stop watching TV and things happening can I ?

Before you attempt to achieve this state of not thinking of anything via prayer, try to find this blank state through meditation. Conjour up the image that works for you, such as a swirling blue mass which turns and turns and turns and then implodes into a tiny dot of nothing, leaving a black space. Once you have practiced this for some time the black space will become easy to bring to mind. While praying, the minute another thought comes into your mind, go to the black space (or at first, the swirling mass and then the black space until you get the hang of it).

You would achieve this a lot more quickly if you meditate with a trained person who can help you achieve this state.

Sorry what was the question again.......? only kidding!
why not try to set aside a few minutes each day, where you sit in quite, think about what you want to say and then say your prayer for 5 minutes. Sort of little but off en, try to think of it as conversation with god, i am sure you don't do it when talking to your friends! Remember we are human, we all do it and after all god is forgiving

That's called poor attention span, you are not concentrating on task at hand, so seems like subconsciously you don't want to pray but social obligations forcing u to do so, just keep on trying. Its difficult to do that as there are so many distractions in modern world but even in olden times, hermits and sadhus(holy men) use to venture into woods to find solace

By no means I'm suggesting you wander away into woods

your ideal are & is to bring you up to where you can be held to your own and not be influenced to earthly qualms, try to get better informed about how an artist has to drive in his work to keep on in a religious work and see the dedication of those who have given to make it possible to have the illusional moments that you do. we weave large and small together and save every scrap of thought to push our selves ahead to be stronger than we are so That it help when there are no strengths in our selves for core material and we have still further to go. everything you believe will fail you and then it is not fear but self belief that is calm and brave, all who are stressed try to dump it on others have no fear it has been the burden forever, piece of cake

This is normal. Nobody but people who have trained (martial arts, Yogo) can block out everything for a long period of time (even for the length of time it takes to say a prayer).
Don't worry yourself. Everybody does it.

This happens to every one. and some time s our wired dreams are just because of this thought to get more concentration just try meditating Or yoga it wont be easy initially but things will work fine. but the most important thing is like Wat ever Ur doing don't do it just for the hec of it.
to start off just try concentrating on a single dot.

How about next time you focus on what you shouldn't be thinking about and try not to focus on what you should be thinking about! Perhaps that would work?! hehe :o)
