Why do living things need energy?

Energy comes from nowhere but the sun. The sun gives us plants and animals. We eat the plants or animals which has the energy. If we didn't need energy, we wouldn't need the sun. If we don't have the sun, we're dead.

Or something like that anyway. Why like?
