The leaf gains energy from from the sun using photosynthesis, if it weren't for the sun, the leaf would not have grown in the first place.

The seed of the plant needs warmth and water to germinate. The warmth comes from the sun. The groving plant needs sunlight to power photosynthesis where it turns the nutrients in the soil and water into energy to grow. The energy stored in the leaf is relased by the insect when it digests the leaf
