I'm not an expert but I had the same problem. A friend told me that Microsoft Office takes up a lot of memory, so if you don't have a lot of memory it is going to be really slow. I was able to add more memory to my computer and it helped a lot, although it's still slow but not as much as it once was.

Do you have any kind of office add-ins installed? These could be contributing to its slow startup times. You could also give a defrag a try to get the MS Office file fragments in order.

Its a big, powerful program. Plus it loads your documents into memory upon startup, so the more you have saved the longer it will take.
