first, make sure it isn't the bone. You can do this by pressing the bone at various locations of the leg. An x-ray would be best but this could be done at home. Next, extend the leg to its full lenght. If the dog doesn't cry out from this, it isn't the leg. Next, press are various points of the muscle where you suspect the pain. You'll know when you reach the spot because the dog will yelp. Get some canine aspirin and give it to the dog. Lock the dog in a create or kennel or a area where it will not move around too much. After about an hour, take them out and massage the area. THIS WILL HURT but just like humans, massaging alwasy hurts the first day. This is your test now, you have to keep the dog restricted from movement practically all day. Only let them out when they need to pee or poop and only when feeding them. Otherwise, keep them restricted. Give aspirin at least 2 times a day and massage at least 2 times a day. Healing will take a while depending on what degree of strain or pulling was done. Try to keep the dog from running or movign around too much for at least 2-3 days. After the 3rd day, they should be getting better little by little and you could let them out for longer parts of the day. KEEP doing the MASSAGE until there is no limping at all and even one day after there is no limping. Healing might take a week or later depending on the age and health of the dog. This happened to my youngest dog a couple weeks ago and i followed this method. He was up and running again in a week as if nothing was wrong. If it is a stretched or tight tendon, the vet cant do much but tell you to give him aspirin, massage the leg and restrict his movements. very rarely do they tell you to immobilize the leg. Save your money for now. If in three days, he/she isn't a little better, then take them to the vet.

There are several questions that could help with the answer. How old is the dog? Is it a large breed? Has the dog had a recent increase in activity? Large breed dogs can have several joint disorders. They are also clumsy when young and tend to strain themselves. With my dogs I give it one day and then call the vet. I have given them baby aspirin and hot and cold compresses until the visit. Large breeds can also have hip and elbow dysplasia. Any tiime a dog shows signs of on going discomfort you should take them to the vet.

Had a dog once that did something like that, started limping for no reason. Took her to one vet and he wanted to operate right away. Went to another vet for second opinion and he gave her (no kidding) a massage on the leg. She was fine and no operation needed.

Well you could take him to the vet. But if there isn't one close by then rap tape around the leg. Not super tight but firm. This should help, this is what told us to do when our dog broke her ribs.

I would call the vet first before you take your dog there he might have a pulled a muscle and just needs time to heal. If it gets worse you need to take him it might a tear.

If your child's leg was hurt, would you inquire on the internet as to the severity and treatment of that injury?
Please take the animal to the vet, as you would take your child to the doctor.
