Either genetics or painful or traumatic events in your life, especially the younger you are.
Mental illness can surely be caused by divorce and brain surgery, depending on what part of the brain was being worked on.
Go to your doctor or a local psychiatrist before you do anything you might regret later on in life.

Any trauma can cause a mental illness. A nasty divorce and major surgery certainly can qualify as trauma. I believe (as do many experts) that we can be pre-disposed genetically or environmentally to have a mental disorder but there is usually some trauma that sets it off.
Are you talking about depression or some other type of mental disorder? Surgery and divorce both can cause depression. Usually this is easily treated with either therapy, time or short-term medication.
The worse thing that you can do is ignore it, though. Please get some help. "Deal with your stuff before it deals with you."
Good luck to you.

Any type of stressfull situation can set off a mental illness if there was already a chemical imbalance to begin with. If you are referring to yourself I hope you are getting help. If not I hope the person gets the profesional help they need. Good luck.

Some mental illnesses are genetic, others are induced by environmental stressors.
We have very little research on the nature of mental illness. Less research is done on them than other diseases and it is sad, because lots of people suffer depression and other disorders.

No!What kind of idiot thinks that.Mental illness is either caused by chemical imbalance or contributed to by traumatic events.Steroids don't effect mental health. At very best they could cause roid rage.I'm sure every body builder and most other users think you're a big idiot now.
My mom has mental illness. Why don't you take your rhetorical questions where they're wanted.Nowhere.
Looks to me that you're the one who's ill judging by this post and some of those messages you sent and his comments aren't appreciated either.
My mother is very sick and your stupid jokes aren't appreciated. She's on SSRIs and other meds for her sickness.Take your stupid dispute elsewhere and both of you should stop insulting the mentally ill.

No one knows the answer. You just have to find a way to treat it and move on. Therapy helps allot also.

Staying on here too long.........No, if you're serious, you can be born with a chemical imbalance, it could be something in your family, it could be abuse and/or it could be head trauma.
