Who polices the big pharmaceuticals? Is it just me or does the FDA seem like a total pushover when it comes to practically any new drug that pops up?

I suggest boonietec look into some of the legislation pharmaceuticals both lobby for/against. Check out nice ol' Merck for example. 1 in 10 million? Wake up dude. They hide bad results and refuse to try alternative medicine research. No problem with successful businesses here, it's just that lack of full disclosure and ethics thing that gets me.

no one polices them- the research that is presented by the companies is research done by the companies- most research that is done by independents and shows the negative effects of the drugs is squelched by those with the big money and big power. The fact that legal (OTC and pharmaceutical drugs combined) drugs are the number one killer of people in America today is not something you will likely see headlining the media, though it is the truth. It is disgusting that there is research showing curative and preventative measures for so called incurable diseases but the pharmaceutical companies make no money from it so it takes a persons willingness to do the research and boldness to tell a doctor no and a commitment to a better lifestyle to live a healthier and happier drug free life!

Why is it than any successful business is assumed to be evil? Without "Big Pharma" your life expectancy would be about 30 years less then it is now. Do they make profits? yes. That is how they can afford to research new drugs to treat all the illnesses that people want to be able to cure just by taking a pill. I really don't care if their executives are tooling around in yachts as long as they keep coming up with all the miracle cures we are seeing today.
And why is it that drugs are expected to have NO side-effects for anyone, and 1 person who has a bad reaction out of 10 million draws the lawyers like sharks to sue them and make the rest of us pay more to cover the payouts to the sharks.
And NO I don't work for a pharmaceutical company.
Oh yea, and they can't test it on a monkey anymore before they give it to your kid, because that would make PETA mad.

And guess who the stock-holders are - Anyone with a 401K - "the little people"

The FDA bureaucracy depends on the drug industry and vice versa. Big Pharmaceuticals are VERY wealthy and make HUGE contributions to politicians of both parties too.
They are positively slavering for the hour when congress passes national health care and socialized medicine (grab your wallets!!).

Yeah its all about the money, never mind using the drugs that have always worked well with few side effects..never mind a cure for anything...never! Then the drug companies couldnt make money.

Please. The Pharma. compines take it right up the rear of the goverment everytime they make a check or draft another piece of legislation in their favor. No one can pull these two lovers outta bed. As long as it sells, that's all they care about.

FDA and stockholders are the only entities that keep pharma companies in check.
