A wine connoisseur is called an oenophile (from Greek Oinos, wine, + Greek Phile, love or lover of). This is different from a sommelier, who is someone who makes their living advising people on the pairing of wine and food.
Anyone can be an oenophile; all you have to do is love wine and educate yourself about it. There are oenophile societies where people who all enjoy wine can get together to discuss it, sample it, learn about it.
To become a sommelier generally involves obtaining credentials. The Sommelier Society of America website can give you more information. http://www.sommeliersocietyofamerica.org/
The American Sommelier Association offers certification programs: http://www.americansommelier.com/
Enjoy!

YOu don't have to be a sommelier to be a wine connoisseur.....a sommerlier learns his craft in schools or in the restaurant business...........a good wine connoisseur can be anyone that is really interested in wines and has a good knowledge from experience.

sommelier, pronounced, so-mel-ee-ay , that's my phonics. It's really a deep knowledge of wine. Most sommeliers were once waiters in nice restaurants and start learning that way. Then get the promotion to become a sommelier. It's not easy. Years and yeas of wine, and knowledge and tastings...
Good luck!
