I was lucky! The first one I tried worked! I started on a low dose of Prozac, only 5mg. I was gradually increased to 20 mg over the next couple years. I've been on it nearly 10 years now, and still doing fine.
The only time I have trouble now is when I run out and go too long before refilling them. I'm good for about a month, then my mood goes back to those dark and scary places.

My mother went through 5 different medications that worked for a short period of time before her symptoms got worse again.
She has a mix that she has been on for two years now -- and it's a life saver. She takes Effexor as the main medication, and during the winter months she takes 1/4 tablet of Abilify. It's something they have just started to use with people who have depression, and it is really working well. No... it's a miracle worker. It gave her the energy she needed to get up out of bed and back into life again.

I tried two before I got one that worked. The third one worked. However part of it is my fault. After the second medication did not work, I waited quite a while before going back to the doctor. I gave Paxil and Lexapro several months to work. When I was put on Cymbalta, I noticed a difference in two weeks.
Keep trying and be persistant. Hopefully you have a doctor who is willing to work with you. The MAOI medications can be used if nothing else works, so there is always hope.
Good luck to you.

Well it defers for different people. For you, you might be you of the lucky ones and the first medications could be the right one that works. Each medication takes about 2-4 weeks to fully start working. In my case ( I have bipolar, it took trying alot of different types of medications) but like I said it's different for every person. Good luck.

might be a good idea to think about natural remedies too... I suffered chronically from depression and found a natropath which made me a homeopathic remedy which i have found helpful along with meditation.... may sound all hippy but I am so glad I have gone down this path as I feel I have achieved it on my own
