Acyclovir for cold sores is an FDA-approved prescription medication. Millions of cold sore sufferers are getting benefit from it. Zovirax, the brand name for Acyclovir, is an effective treatment for fever blisters. However, it does not work for everyone. The only way to know for sure if it will work for you is to give it a try.
These sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). Acyclovir for cold sores prevents HSV from replicating inside your cells. That allows your immune system to come in and sweep up the virus.
Acyclovir treatment must be applied at the very first stage at which you feel the fever blister symptoms (the tingle stage). You may also feel itching or burning in addition to the tingling. Fever blister outbreaks can be treated fast by applying Acyclovir directly to the affected area. If you are a few days late with your application of Acyclovir you may get a fever blister, but having applied the medication already, the duration of the sore should be reduced.
Acyclovir medication comes four different varieties. The most common and prescribed medication by doctors is Zovirax in pill form. From pharmacies and different health stores you can also opt for acyclovir ointment. In order to get rid of fever blisters, you can also try Acyclovir tablets and liquids.
You will need to apply Zovirax on the effected area at least five times a day for four days. You should apply the medication as you feel itching, burning, or tingling. Usually, a dose of 400 milligrams is recommended for recurrent cold sores (for at least 12 months).
If proper dosage of Acyclovir is taken, it is safe to use as a fever blister treatment. In some cases, skin allergies, inflammation, itching or skin drying may occur, but it is not as harmful as other non-prescribed medication could be. If you are looking for a new treatment to try, Acyclovir for cold sores is a viable option.
