Well Toshiba backed HD-DVD whereas Sony backs up Blu-Ray. Note that I used past tense for HD-DVD. This is cause HD-DVD is essentially non-existent. There was for a while what was called the format wars. Sony won, therefore Blu-Ray format is the only high definition format out there now. Personally I would've wanted HD-DVD to win because people would be confused between Blu-Ray & DVD more than they would between HD-DVD & DVD.

Remember long ago during the days of VHS vs Beta? This is the same thing from the same companies. Sony is introducing Blu-Ray and will be coding all of their movies in Blu-Ray format. To help kick it off they are incorporating a Blu-Ray player in the PS3. Everyone else wants to use HD DVD. Really, the picture quality will be the same. This is just another battle in a really long war Sony has with every other manufacture of electronics.

In case you think that I'm just making this up, Sony really is notorious for this kind of thing. Everyone else uses SD memory cards while Sony uses memory sticks. Sony came up with beta and JVC came out with VHS. For camcorders, Sony came out with 8mm tape, while everyone else used VHS and then MiniDV tape. The list goes on and on. Sony wants to take over the electronics world. They still makes some pretty cool stuff though.

Both use blue laser. The basic method of "burning" or impressing data is the same, but the pit dimensions and formats are different.

Both formats are having picture quality problems, but HD-DVD right now is doing a better job overall.

well they are both spelled differently and they work on different machines. i would say that the blu-ray is better as it holds way more information on it. and they are made by different companies.
