Go for it!!! No you are not too old to start. Yes it's true that most of the class will be younger than you, but sometimes people start after retirement. It will be tough at first, but keep practicing and you will improve in you techniques, strength and flexibility.

In a good martial arts school, you will be allowed to "ease in" to training. You will be expected to try and keep trying, sucess will come with time. It is normal to feel akward at first. In a good school, thier philosophy on fighting will be similar to this: Walk away from a fight if you can, run if you have to. Fighting is a last resort.

If you are concerned about any part of training, you should be able to talk to the Sensai (instructor) about your concerns and the sensai should give you satisfying answers. If you do not feel like you can discuss your concerns, then go to a different school.

I'm 37 and workout with 20 years old all the time. I do very well and only started jujitsu a few years ago. I did do a year of high school wrestling and a few years of boxing as a teenager. To tell you the truth I was pretty amazed how easy it came to me and how I was able to compete with all the young guys. I progressed rapidly probably because I was interested. The black belts still feed me my lunch but other than that I can hang with all other belts.

I say do it. It will keep you fit at the least.

You are never too old to do something you want to do.

It depends on what kind of arts you would like to practice of course. don't try to do the most spectacular arts in the world though.
but jiu jutsu, karate, judo, kind of arts will suit you perfectly.

I am a martial arts instructor for years and gave classes in many different disciplines, 30% of my classes are fathers and sons taking classes together.

Try to look for a reasonable school who is in to their arts and not to much competition. maybe you can take some classes to try.

I hope that every person who answered this question negative knows that a man is on his strongest when he reaches 50.
In my classes I had many older men kicking the **** out of the wise*** boys. ( sorry for the language, but I can't stand the statement of much younger people in martial arts)

Why are the best teachers in the world over 50 and not stopping?
Make sure your doctor agrees with your choice!

Hi, I know several people over the age of 40 (even over 50!) who have greatly benefitted from picking up martial arts. Don't take this as my being rude, but make sure you have good, strong bones (takes supplements if necessary) as bone density deteriorates as we age and even in non-contact martial arts, contact can happen, and sometimes, breaks and fractures occur. I just read an article about an 80 year old woman from St Louis who is a trapeze artist. You're only as old as you feel..have a great time

I'm 44 and love to do alot of different physical activity...hiking, swimming, biking, etc.

At the Kung-Fu school a friend of mine attended, most of the Tai-Chi students were adults 30 y/o and older. Participation in an exercise program at any age is a good thing. It is recommended that you consult a doctor before starting one though.

I have been studying Tae Kwan Do for a year. I started when I was 51.

There will be some aches and pains and you may not heal as quickly as you would want.

There are many benefits. Give it a try.
